THE ROLE OF CONTEMPLATION IN A POSTHUMAN AGE
Known for her leadership in bridging science and religion, Sr. Ilia Delio returns for our Annual Conference this Spring. She understands science and religion as “two ways of knowing the world” bringing her evolving ideas about spirituality and science for the 21st century, while reminding us of the traditions of Franciscan thought as well as the work of her treasured source, Teilhard de Chardin. She frequently cites de Chardin, mentioning insights such as, “consciousness is the core of evolution.”
We heard her speak on “Cosmology, the Cosmic Christ and Consciousness: Nurturing the Contemplative Self” in 2016. Her new Omega Center is based on the recognition, “Where there is God, there is life, movement, incarnation, becoming, convergence, unity and new relationships.”
Sr. Delio has suggested that familiarity with her books: A HUNGER FOR WHOLENESS: Soul, Space, and Transcendence and THE UNBEARABLE WHOLENESS OF BEING might be helpful but not necessary reading prior to the Conference.
Sr. Ilia Delio, OSF, is a Franciscan Sister of Washington, DC and American theologian specializing in the area of science and religion, with interests in evolution, physics, and neuroscience and the import of these for theology. She currently holds the Josephine C. Connelly Endowed Chair in Theology at Villanova University. Ilia holds two honorary doctorates, one from St. Francis University in 2015, and one from Sacred Heart University in 2020.
