The Resistances of the Human Condition

"Knowing what is the right response is not the same as doing it and here’s why: The brain now according to all the research is a plastic kind of operation.  So from the earliest day one the brain is processing stimuli through the senses and it tends – given the environment and our response and our temperament – to use the same channels of alerting the rest of the body to this particular experience, something like the erosion of a hillside where the water takes the path of least resistance and builds a kind of arroyo or a stream so that all new rain or all new electrical stimuli from the senses are going to go through the habitual apparatus.  So, now having been alerted to our possible personality limitations we try to change this by inserting values of moderation, forgiveness, understanding, cooperation, collaboration.  This doesn’t have much effect on the brain because physiologically it is set up a certain way. So, the first thing we have to do is to get out our bulldozers and flatten the playing field. If you don’t have a bulldozer it means shoveling and this is going to take time and that’s why when we don’t keep our resolutions too readily because our brain is set up a certain way and it will not change without some effort.  And it won’t do so right away as a rule unless the inspiration is overwhelming.  So, day after day then we’re confronted with our usual reactions to things even when we want to change them and know they’re not fully human or holistic or grown-up or mature, and so on. This is what is meant by the human condition."   LISTEN NOW
